On June 19th, 1865, General Order No. 3 was announced by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. We now commemorate this significant event every year. Known as Emancipation Day, Liberation Day, Jubilee Day and Freedom Day, it is a United States national holiday celebrating the emancipation of the last enslaved people in the United States. Here at the Clinton Library, we would like to recognize Juneteenth with a list of fiction and nonfiction books by celebrated African American authors, celebrating liberation and acknowledge the ongoing work many people continue to pursue towards freedom and equality for all members of our communities, states, and nation.
